Yes, I have to think it was a manufacturing defect in this case rather than road damage. I believe I will do research and change brands as these get expired.

I got a new set of maxxis load range E tires last month at a local mom and pop tire shop. They replaced the E range Carlise tires that were getting old. E range tires are more expensive than the D range tires, but I want the extra safety margin, especially since I had good luck with the Carlises. A pair mounted and balanced, including tax, was $300. And I shopped around.
They are made in Southeast Asia.....I believe Thailand.

There was a period of time that Maxxis were not available. However, it looks like they are. For example:
http://simpletire.com/maxxis-225-75r15-tl15713000-tires
http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...FYqBfgodIHcAlA
I think these are the "e" rated ones.

I checked a month ago and the nearest was 94 miles away, that isn't exactly local. Just sayin not as available as I would prefer and if you have say a roadside issue another 200 mile round trip? Guess I could camp in the area!!!!!

Just looked online, now nearest dealer is 154 miles away, 300 round trip.
Could pay shipping and get mounted local when needed
