Default LED Light On Forward Shell

Hello Folks,

I noticed a red LED light on the outside top rear lip of the forward shell. This LED is at the center of two arms which are attached to the shell edge. The LED is always on when the unit is opened and I wonder what it is for and could I turn it off in any way.

I could not find anything about it in the manual.

Thank you for the help,

Phil Friess

That's your radio antenna. The red light shows that it is receiving power.

Thanks, I was wondering that myself. But what does it mean when it is blinking red instead of solid red?

The LED shows that the powered FM ant is powered. Is is really flashing. It is very small and very focused, so may appear to flash unless looking at it straight on close up.

What do I have to do to turn the powered FM antenna off? The radio is off now.

Thank you for the help,

There are several threads on shutting this off ( search for FM antenna) . The power is taken from a "Y" in the power wire for the radio. You can turn it on and off if you add a switch to the circuit. The wires are in the space above the fridge.

Blinking? How fast does it blink? Most LED lights actually do "blink", but much too fast for the eye to see, so they appear to be solidly on. If the blinking on yours is slow enough to be clearly blinking (say one or two times per second) and visibly blinking from any angle, there is something else going on.

Commodor Dick, you've played with this thing more than anyone. Does this ring any chimes with you?

I recently replaced our amplified radio antenna with another OEM unit. From information on their web site, the red light indicates the antenna is receiving 12 volt power. If the light is not lit, the powered function is not working and your ability to receive any radio signal will be severely limited. One indication would be a noticeable station signal fade when standing in front of the radio or when closing the TM entry door. The light should either be on or off; where on indicates it is receiving power and off indicates a malfunction. If you are seeing intermittent or a flashing light I would suspect a bad ground. The smaller wire coming from the base of the antenna head is the ground wire. It is grounded in the corner of the upper shell, street side. Follow the wire back to the ground. The ground connector may be oxidized. Try cleaning up the ground to see if that corrects the problem. There could also be an issue with the bullet connector located in the wire chase behind the upper shell lift arm.

Power for the radio antenna comes from a tap into the 12 volt radio power wire. When inserting a shut off switch make sure you are upstream from the splice.

I wondered the same thing........... Is the red light just an indicator or is it a sensor of some kind that covering it might interfere? I was just going to cover the light with some electric/duct tape so it is not showing.

Just an indicator. If it bothers you, cover it up.
