Battery Won't Power TM

Howdy All,

After a long lay-off we're taking back out the TM for some 4th of July fun with the 15 month twins!

I can't seem to get anything to work on battery power now. It works fine on shore power. Here's what I tried.

Tested and charged battery. After sitting for about 4 months battery was still at about 80%. Charged it to 100% and hooked up to find no battery juice to TM.

I replaced in the in-line fuse with another one (30A) just in case it was blown even though it looked okay. Still no lights or anything available in the TM.

I took out the battery and retested it. It's still sitting pretty at 90%.

I'm stumped. The exposed wires look fine and I cleaned off all the battery connectors and studs.

Any suggestions?

Try the following, which I learned from Ed at TM:

Go to the inverter box (mine is in the hallway next to bed & bathroom wall)

Flip all the breakers off and wait about a minute. Make sure they're copmpletely off.

Turn the master on first and then all the others. Again, check to make sure they are all the way on.

I did this once and have never had to do it again.

Try the simplest first:

If battery box has an external switch, make sure it's in the "ON" position. I've forgotten about this little switch once or twice

I tried the circuit breaker trick with no luck. There is no switch around my battery.

The lugs where the wire tie into the convertor box looked secure. I'm perplexed!

Does anyone know if the lack of battery power will affect my trailer brakes and lights?

TM brakes and running lights get their power from the tow vehicle, except for the breakaway system, which uses the TM battery to power the brakes.

It could be that the fuse holder failed. I think that I have heard of that happening for the glass tube fuse holder. As a matter of fact, I think that it happened to me. If you still have that type, perhaps you should replace it with an fuse holder that takes an automotive blade fuse.

Better yet, change the glass tube fuse holder to a circuit breaker fuse.

Thanks! I decided to go with the blade type fuse and that did the trick! When I tore into the original fuse it was awfully corroded so that was probably the cause. I installed a sealed blade fuse after a few snips of the wires and voila!...working battery.
