Default Filling up at home?

Another new TM owner with a pretty basic question. I've taken it camping 3 times since I purchased it last November. Each time I go I fill the 40 gallon fresh water tank along with the toilet. Has anyone had any problems with leaks during the travel? I'm now thinking it might be a better idea to give up a few gallons out of my fresh water tank and fill the toilet once I've set up camp. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

That's about 360-380 pounds of water - even more if you fill the water heater. And even more than that if you have anything in the gray water tank. Have you weighed your rig?

Many of us try to travel dry, and fill up when we arrive. Of course, sometimes there is no water (or no good water) at your destination, so something else has to be done. Water can be carried in tanks in the back of the tow vehicle, or instance.

Anyway, the question isn't really leaks - it is road weight. You should know what your ready-to-roll TM weighs, to avoid overload and tire problems.

I exclusively boondock and have to carry the extra weight over some Colorado passes. H2O @ 8.3 lb/gal, when computed, not only increases weight quickly, but puts it all on the left side of my 3124KS. If I don't care what I'm taking, I still only top off my 20 gal fresh tank and then use that to charge my hot water tank (6 gal) and then only put a MAXIMUM of 2 gal in the Thetford. If you really want to extend the Thetford, you can put just enough water to dissolve the 'blue stuff' and then pee in it for a couple of days to get it to the charge point. Putting up to 3 gal into a 6 gal reservoir never made any sense to me. Once I get to the campground, I use the hand pump to fill a 6 gal portable 'jerry can' with spout to recharge the fresh H2O as necessary. If you are going somewhere with full hook ups, I would put in just enough H2O to pump into the hot water heater. If you use shore power, you can use the electric function of the hot water heater to preheat your water before leaving the house. That way it's hot (or at least warm) when you get there. This procedure affords much more in the way of 'consumables' when I get where I'm going.
