Default Battery source

I need to replace the OEM battery in my TM. It's labeled capacity is 105 AH but I only get about 50 now as indicated by my experience with the Xantrex Amp Hour meter. I also find the voltage drops sufficiently to not run my AC inverters any more.

Question is this: what is the best brand and model 12V battery? I have a single 12V in the far rear of the and don't have room for 2 6V batteries or even 2 12 V batteries. So I am planning to continue with a single 12V. I have a Honda EU 2000i generator for when the battery runs down. I also have the PD9060 converter which does a great job of maintaining my battery in storage. I just plug it in and leave it that way.

When I replaced my battery, I discovered that a larger battery than the OEM will fit the box in the rear compartment. The battery I have now is a Trojan SCS200. I think that it is a group 31 size.

Bob -

My suggestion is to be sure you get a true deep cycle battery. This is probably advertised as a golf cart battery or something similar. The TM OEM battery is an Interstate group 24 or group 27 "marine / deep cycle" battery. It is NOT a true deep cycle battery, and in fact the term "marine" is nothing more than advertising hype. There is no such thing, spec-wise, as a marine battery - the term is meant to suggest that you can use it as an engine-cranking battery, and as a house battery. Of course the result is that you get the worst of both.

Find a good true deep-cycle battery, and you will be happier.

Bill,

I know that. My understanding is that the only true deep cycle battery is the golf cart 6V ones we keep talking about. Since I can't put in 2 batteries (haven't figured how to do that in my 3326 with 1 battery in the trunk), I have to go the 12V route.

So do you know of a "true deep cycle" 12 V battery?

Or do I go with the Trojan that Tim found above? Is that model a "true deep cycle"? They do call it a deep cycle battery, but with all the freedom (spin) vendors take in naming their products, I am not convinced.

Bob,
Here is the only 12V Trojan battery that is listed on their website under the golf cart section. It's specs indicate that it stores more energy than the one I bought. It may fit the box; I took my box to the store and tried it out when I bought mine.

Thumbs up AGM batteries

Bob, have you looked at the Concorde line of 12 volt AGM RV batteries? They are true deep cycle batteries. I've had one for 4 years and it has been trouble-free. Once I even carelessly neglected it for several months and it discharged down to 10.8 volts! That extreme level of discharge did not harm it at all and it still maintains 12.3 volts when fully charged. One advantage of an AGM battery - besides the fact that it won't leak or spill electrolyte or give off hydrogen - is that it loses less than 1% of its charge monthly if disconnected from your TM's satellite loads. Disconnect it and leave it unserviced all winter. It will still read a full charge when you open up your TM in the spring.

As a battery follup:

I tested my old battery which was a Trojan start/deep cycle rated 110 AH in a 20 hour discharge and found it to have a capacity of 35 AH at 1.6 Amp rate. So the battery had degraded significantly. The TM was manufactured Sept '03, so the battery is 3 years and 2 months old. I had totally discharged it unintentionally about 5 times in the 2 years I owned it.

I bought a 115 AH 12V Trojan deep cycle battery (not rated for starting) for $119 including tax.

I decided to get the flooded battery since it is about half the cost of the better gell battery. I have the PD9160 converter which does a great job of minimizing bubbling of the water. Thanks for the help, everyone.

Which one did you get? How many amp/hours?

Thanks.
