We had a permit, but we also had the dealer's special license plate insert (like the ones you get on a new or used car before you get the CA plates) so it was suggestive of the fact that we'd just purchased it and probably on the way home.

Is it possible & legal to ask a dealer for one of those? It might help you get home "under the radar"...
