Smoke Odor isn't just on surfaces also deeply penetrates any porous surface.

This is the main reason DIY remedies fail, There is more to odor removal than cleaning & you should never apply Sodium Bicarbonate aka Backing Soda to carpet. It can cause other issues trust me I have made lots of $$$$s in my 20yrs from Sodium Bicarbonate damage.

Airing out with powered ventilation can also help allot depending on the scope of damage. Smoke & pet odor are two very stubborn odors to 100% eliminate. One thing for sure trying to mask them with another odor is a temporary solution.
