Absolutely, Bill. Sharing ideas on this forum is what it's all about. I do like the spar urethane idea, but how is the smell? I would assume, you need to let it air out till it drys. I'm at the tail end of a kitchen/bath remodel, and my contractor taught me the trick on caulking the base board top edge. All these years, I've been cutting at the first cut mark on the tip. He cuts his where its about a #7mm pencil, and it works so much better. I may use a clear bathroom caulk at the metal edges. Oh, something I saw on This Old House. A gentleman used Gorilla Glue, but he applied it like a wax. Just enough to coat it and he said it seals the wood well and it lasts a long time.
