I too am from the aviation world and the references are not too different than what you are used to. Curb side would be the passenger/copilot side or right side of the trailer, the street side is the pilots/road/left side of the trailer.
Now for the UK folks, this is where I'm not really sure, but I would think you can use the references I made in the first part of the paragraph.
As rmHaar stated the door side is the curbside, so using that as a reference point will work with the TM.
I would agree not all folks understand every reference in their conversations.
