I'm impressed that it works. If it had occurred to me to try it, I would have applied a nice thick coat of clear outdoor spar urethane over the wood / fakewood surfaces, and down over any caulking if I thought it would stick. The unpaintable gaps at the edges of the folding panels worry me - perhaps a rubber flap could be arranged to cover them. Given your experience, I still may try it.
