Put the jack on the frame as near to the axle as you can. I use the stabilizer on the side i'm changing. For safety, I put down the jack stands once I jack it up with the jack.

FYI: I tested my jack and lug wrench from my TV and they work. So now I don't need to carry these tools.

You might want to check yout spare tire date code. Even if the tire is new but over 6 year old, I would replace it. They self destruct with time.
