Forgive me if this is a dumb question - but after starting the refrig, how long did you wait before deciding it wasn't working? These absorption-type refrig mechanisms are very slow to cool. The common procedure for checking it is to turn it on, then wait at least two hours, then put your hand on the floor of the freezer. At this point, you should feel some coldness, but not arctic freezing.

It will take several more hours for the cold to penetrate noticeably into the refrig compartment. That's why it is always wise to turn the unit on to pre-cool it the night before loading it for a trip.
