My big reason for changing out converters was to accomodate Lithium batteries in the charging profile, but I also understood that the old parallax lead acid charging profile was not good for the batteries either. Couple those reasons with the fact that it was 16 years old and I figured it was time to change it.
A note on the Lithium charging though. Lithium charging is still a bit new to the converter manufacturers and some of their older "Lithium" models don't really meet the needs of the Lithium batteries either. My new charger at least allows me to charge my Lithium batteries semi-manually, and is also consistent with my lead acid battery string as well. Not a perfect solution, but getting there.
