Default Alternative WiFi backup camera scheme

A number of different outdoor WiFi cameras made for home security are sold on Amazon. You can get higher-than-HD resolution and 100 degree view for $130. Many of them run on 12 volts. Some of them come with viewing apps, and you can also get viewing apps from the app store. Some of them use power-over-Ethernet, which makes things complicated. Only get one of those if it comes with an Ethernet power injector that works on 12 volts.

Modern phones and tablets can work as access points, so you don't really need a WiFi router. Just turn on hotspot mode and your camera should connect to the phone. Configuring the camera to your access point name and password will be necessary. The phone or tablet will need car power to do this for more than a couple of hours.

It's also possible for some cameras to be their own access points.

Unobstructed line-of-sight between transmitter and receiver is best. The antenna should really be above the roof.
