The camping situation here in CA sounds pretty much like in CO. Most of the popular coastal, Sierra, and the National Park campgrounds are filled up 6 to 7 months ahead of time (weekends and summer months). I wish that we could just wander into a campground that we liked and stay, but with the sheer number of people who like to camp/RV here it's very hard to count on finding a place to stay without making reservations. There are some spots that don't take reservations, but you really have to be there no later than Thursday to stay for the weekend. Out situation is made worse by the fact that we have school-age children, and can't go camping in the "off season" during the week. Whenever we have time off from school, so does everyone else.

Our favorite campground in Lake Almanor doesn't take reservations, but we've always managed to get a spot. We usually leave home on Sunday through Wednesday, and so far, we've always found a site. After the first weekend we can move if a better site becomes available. I am always so happy to just get a campsite after a 6 - 7 hour drive that as long as we can fit our trailer into the campsite, and the neighbors and their pets are well-behaved, that's all that matters.
