A business here in the DFW area has recorded old Amos n' Andy tapes into their telephone system to entertain callers who are put on hold. Several times I've found myself hoping the guy I called was on the phone so I could hear the entire segment.

The line I remember best from a recent call is when an agitated female voice is heard in the background and Amos tells Andy in his unmistakable drawl "uh oh, here comes the meanest woman in the world" and a few seconds later, when another voice is heard "and this one is the first runner-up."

That show would probably never be aired in this age of political hyper-correctitude (hows that for a new word?) but it's still a hoot for some of us near-geezers who can remember when.
