I am experiencing the same problem as this TM Forum member who wrote:

"They are supposed to pry off from the front so you can get to the wood screws to remove the speakers. The covers are on so tight they won't not pry off. Tried a flat screwdriver, putty knife, etc. to no avail. It appears that I will have to rip out the speakers and strip the screw holes."

I haven't yet pried so hard as to break the black plastic or rip the speaker out of the wood panel. One cover rotated 1/8 back and forth without releasing then locked up tight. I am still hoping there is a trick to popping them off but it appears that you either can't keep them on or they're on so tight you have to break either the plastic or wood panel to get them off. Still like the idea of getting the black cover to pop off more easily somehow without breaking anything.
