You'd be surprised the strength of the adhesive tapes on the market nowadays. Also, there is not much tension on the TM awning material. As opposed to standard campers that use a tension spring roll, the TM awning runs out and in with little tension other than the cranking. If it were me, I'd test the patch method. What would it hurt? May save you for awhile.
