The Winegard antenna should make a HUGE improvement in your TV reception, much better than rabbit ears. Others here have reported problems with the wiring in the newer TM's; do a search and you should come up some posts that describe the problems and fixes.

If your TM is under warranty and you aren't too far away, I'd just take it back to the dealer to fix both the reception and the leak.
