I did not know this -- mine were literally next to each other, tanks basically touching with the drains both coming through the same hole in the floor -- but the freshwater tank drain was still separate from the hot water tank drain. Not at all sure what the benefit would be to tie them together -- you'd think the mixing of the hot with cold would not be desirable, likewise the mixing of high-pressure and low-pressure sides would (I'd think) cause a problem. You'd need to add a one-way valve to fix that issue (at a minimum) as well as extra internal tubing to remove one valve on the outside, and at that point I'd think any potential $$ savings would be lost.
