Believe it or not, not all TMs have exactly the same amount of closed space above the bed. It depends on exactly where the shell is mounted on the lift arms. And don't forget that the roof is bowed, so there is more clearance in the middle, and less at the edges. And don't forget that you have to leave space for the ceiling light, which is near the edge.
Having said all that, in my particular TM, we added a 1-1/2 inch foam topper, which stays on the bed, which is good because it is under the sheets. On top of that, we have a thin blanket which can stay, and a nice big quilt which cannot stay. When we close, we fold it up and carry it on the couch. Not a big deal.
