I would have a couple of concerns: The rods would not be as securely attached . . . probably just 3 points as compared to the current system which spreads the attaching force along the entire channel; even if there is enough clearance to close the shells, remember that the shells move during transit. I would be afraid the rods would damage the outside shell (or box) outer skin. Also closing or opening the shell(s) isn't always an equal process . . . one side can lag behind, causing that part of the shell to sag more, contacting the box (or other shell) which could scrape or gouge the outer skin. I don't think anchoring the rods is a problem . . . don't think you would need any special anchors.
