I personally feel safer with metal stems and judging from most of the comments that i've seen on the board -- others do also.

Rubber deteriorates over time, therefore old rubber valve stems can suffer the same fate as old trailer tires. If you are considering adding tire pressure monitoring to your trailer tires then it is a certainly recommended. The added weight on the valve stem from the sensor puts more stress on the valve stem.
