We re-upholstered our couch in 2017. I'm attaching several thumbnails that may help with your question. As to the gap you describe, our couch does have a small gap in the same location. It is not noticeable unless you look at it straight-on (eye level) though. The gap may be there to facilitate lifting and pulling the seat forward into the bed set up position. It gives you room to slide you hands under the front of the couch seat.
