I agree with Bill - that diamond plate is there because the shell was heavily damaged at some point. There's no other reason to put it there -- it adds weight, it covers a nice expensive window, and would be a fair amount of work.

I wonder if, as part of the salvage title -- or "rebuilt" title -- they had to name it differently, or could name it differently, and that's how that new VIN sticker got there.
