Larry -

I just measured my TM. There is 7/8" between the forward edge of the frame member and the edge of the wheel well. And with my 15" wheels and 225 73/R15 tires, the smallest gap in between the frame member and the tire is 1.25". I don't think this gap is very important, actually. I'd say as long as you have 1/2" here, you are probably fine. Why? Because the wheel is actually mounted on the torsion arm, which rotates around the axle like a clock hand on a clock. If you look at the inside of the wheel, you should see that as the wheel pops up due to a bump in the road, it should also move forward, away from the frame member.
