Both of these non-electric K-cup makers use the exact same principle. They work great if you follow directions. Some people give these a low star rating because they pour the water in and plunge it way too quickly thus claiming the coffee is too weak.

I pour the hot water in and wait a good 30 seconds to swell up the coffee grounds before I even put the plunger on. Then when I plunge, I pace it so that it takes a good 60 seconds.

The electric Kerug machines push water through slowly not because the mechanics can't do it fast, it's to allow proper extraction of the coffee taste from the grounds.
