Welcome aboard, and thank you for relating your experience.

As you have read, TMs are designed not to sway, and the forum's general experience is that sway control is not necessary. This is in contrast to your old tent trailer, of course, where anti-sway was not part of the design.

I bet the sway control you bought - and found unnecessary - was a friction sway control device. Usually a flat bar, one end attached to a tiny hitch ball near the regualr ball, the other end attached to a sliding mount on the trailer tongue.
