When was the last time you had your bearings serviced? When you run down the highway for 20 minutes, get out and feel the hub. It should be slightly warm, but definitely not hot. If they are, your bearings need attention, and that further heats up the wheel and can contribute to tire failure.

Were they they original Goodyear Marathons? Do you say they are 3 years old because that's when you bought the TM, or because you read the date code on the tire? If the former, the tires may actually be 4 years old. How heavy was the TM? Did you have alot of stuff inside? Full grey & fresh water, toilet, and water heater?

Hot day, hot hubs from unserviced bearings, heavy load, and 4 year-old Goodyear Marathon tires: If you had all 4, I would have bet money on them failing.
