Default Leak behind tub, how do to replace the broken fitting

In my series of minor repairs, I've stumbled upon one I need help with.

I had a leak above the two black drain hoses. Found out it wasn't the drain hoses, but from inside after removing the screen thing and outside shower. I had to replace the hose to the outside shower due to a crack in the screw in part. I thought I'd fixed the leak.

Still a leak, but higher up. l went inside the bathroom and removed the two screws above the tub faucet. I pulled the wall away and found I could access the back of the faucet. I tightened the black ring to the cold water and no more drips (so I thought). Well, the drips started again shortly after using the pump. So, I unscrewed and decided to try some Teflon tape. I tightened up and black ring cracked. I was afraid this would happen. Help.

I've tried to find out how to remove the fitting, but I'm unfamiliar with the metal ring that holds the fitting in place. How do you remove it? Do I need to cut it off? How do you put them back on?

Dumb questions, but I can't seem to find my answers in the forum or on the net. I think it's just my lack of using the right terminology to find out how these work.

Any help would be appreciated.
