Great detective work! Here is a possible (probable) fix for the latest issue, at least in my 2720. You need to get access to the switch, probably through the rear outside compartment, so you can raise it.

The switch has a threaded shank that pokes up through the mounting hole from below. Below the mounting hole, there is a nut on the shank. This nut controls how far the switch can protrude up into the mounting hole.

Above the mounting hole, there is another nut. Once the switch is at the desired height, you screw this second nut down firmly to lock the switch in place. By adjusting both nuts, you can set the switch at any desired height.

Been there, done that. Now you just have to figure out how to access the switch.
