I always like towing stories with happy endings.
Before somewhere around 1990, you got a trailer hitch either by bolting one on the best way you could figure out or by hiring a guy with a welder. Neither was what we'd call "best practice" in today's parlance. RV dealers cobbled hitching solutions from what they had, our tires were of far less reliable quality, our vehicles were largely untested for the things we were doing with them, and nobody ever thought of using a truck scale for an RV. The fact that we towed things and got home safely is a wonder of cautious fear, dumb luck, or God's protection.
One thing I learned was to treasure every mistake, failure, and "oops" moment as an important towing humility lesson.
