Campa Chem Original (the stuff you are looking for) may have been discontinued by the manufacturer. WalMart, my favorite source for years, no longer seems to have it. Amazon says they no longer have it. Camping World says they have it, and if they do, you might do well to stock up on it. We've had the same experience that you describe, so we bought a bunch and use it sparingly. But it won 't last forever. Good luck.
