For the first year and a half I towed my 2720SL with a Ford Explorer Sport Trac with the big V-6. It worked well in most situations, but was a tad weak in the mountains, so I got an F-150 with the Triton V-8 and it handles the Rockies well.
If I lived closer to sea level, and spent most of my time towing there, the Sport Trac might have continued to work OK (though certain eastern mountains would still give it fits), but up here I just had too many concerns about transmission, brakes, etc.
