Hi, T_C -

In my 2002 2720SL, at least, the tool box actually is accessible when the TM is closed, but it is kind of a pain. It is possible to slide the diamond-plate cover off, but since the folded rear shell bears down on it, sometimes I have to grab the edge of the plate with a pair of pliers to pull it (hint: don't keep the pliers in the tool box).

One thing that helps - before you close the TM, put the diamond-plate cover onto the tool box with the cover's front edge UNDER the little lip, instead of on top of it. Another thing - when you want to remove the cover, first pop the rear corner latches. The rear shell rises up just a bit, taking the pressure off the cover.

I can't speak to the 2004 models with the new rear bumper arrangement, although if TM would like to send me one, I'd be glad to do a full review.
