Here's something that happened just the other evening.
I pulled in to our local Mobile station to fill up the SUV and some IDIOTs were sitting in their car, while refueling. The passenger on the other side got out and went to hang up the pump. As I was getting ready to refuel, I heard a fairly load "SNAP" and saw this guy jump back from the pump. He had gotten shocked from Static Electricity. I yelled over to him and said, "You're Lucky you didn't Blow the car up!" Why don't you read the Warning signs on the pump about sitting in your car and STATIC Electricity. He ignored me (naturally) shaking his hand, so he must have gotten a good jolt.
Long story short! Be Careful when you refuel your vehicles. If it is too cold to stand outside and you have to sit in your car, then make sure you touch something outside BEFORE you touch the pump handle. This will discharge any static you have picked up in your car.
It isn't readily broadcast, but there are numerous incidents of people catching themselves on fire and blowing up their cars every year, by simply touching the pump handle and creating a SPARK!
THIS GUY WAS LUCKY!!!
BE CAREFUL!
