Anybody camp in summer in the south?
My husband only gets 3 weeks vacation a year--He currently has 11 days left. We are taking a beach trip (renting a house) with all four kids when the twins finish finals at Auburn (May 5). That takes 5 more days.
Best use of days off involves holiday weeks, so dh doesn't have to take so much time off work. I'd like to space our trips out a little, so Memorial Day weekend is too soon after the beach trip. That leaves 4th of July and Labor Day as our best bets for getting in a camping trip before fall.
Am I crazy for thinking about camping in the southeast during the summer?
Any tips on dealing with mosquitoes?

Yes: either do not go outside or drink plenty of beer (brewer's yeast repels mosquitos).
Personally do not camp without AC.

I wouldn't camp without ac because I am spoiled and too old . You will have a hard time making reservations over a holiday weekend. We are camping this June at Fort De Soto in Florida. Have you ever looked at Pirateland, Lakewood or Ocean Lakes in Myrtle Beach. They all have a huge pool with a lazy river. You can rent golf carts to get around in. Kids love it here. As far as mosquitoes, we are buying a screen tent for Florida. Also we use off lanterns and off spray.

In my opinion, summer is a perfect time to hit the higher elevations and I see your location is Birmingham, so it would be perfect to visit the mountain areas of AL, TN, GA, NC etc. They are closer by so you could make the most of shorter weekend trips. Like others mentioned, reservations in summer could be tough, but there are plenty of good choices, so if you start now, you could possibly find something.
Even up high, you can anticipate needing AC during the day but maybe getting a nice break at night, depending on the weather.
Try Maggie Valley/Waynesville in NC, there are some campgrounds and not extremely crowded with tourists. But still close enough for day trips into the Smokey NP, Pisgah National Forrest, and Asheville, etc.
Even into the Gatlinburg and Dolly Wood areas, if you have an extra day or two to spare.

Gapopper mentioned Myrtle Beach. We stayed at Lakewood every year for spring break when I was in high school. Very family friendly. Not sure if it's a "dry" campground but I know partying is frowned upon. My aunt & uncle happened to be at Pirate Land last year during the TrailBlazers TM rally (they don't have a TM but told me about it) and said it was very nice.

Agree with Oldstick on this... GA State Park Cloudland Canyon comes to mind, close to B'ham on Lookout Mtn and plenty to do.

Oh, yeah--Air conditioning is a non-negotiable!
I just know here in B'ham--well, you don't want to spend a lot of time outside here in summer--even in the shade. Maybe the higher elevations would be tolerable. Still...I'm picturing my kids trying to enjoy their Enos but sweating and complaining and swatting away gnats and mosquitoes. lol Lots of DEET, I guess.
I REALLY want to go camping!
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm leaning toward a mountain location.

So one question is "how do you camp ?". If always stay at a campground with hookups then you already have everything needful. OTOH if more primitive or open field camping then you may need "more".

I can second the Myrtle Beach sites, we also found great campgrounds in Charleston and Hilton Head which may be closer for you. We thoroughly enjoyed Cherokee NC in the Smokies back in the late 90s when camping with our kids. Lots of outdoor activities to choose from in the cooler mountain air. It's hot here in NC but we find many places to go within about a 5 hr radius.
