Default Change in Discounts at National Campgrounds

I have not seen this on this forum before, if I missed it and this is a duplicate, please accept my apology.

This is a proposal being considered that could effect many TM Owners. The Proposed Directives (Notice)1for Forest Service Concession Campground Special Use Permits, E9-28744, requests the Senior (Golden Age) and Access (Golden Access) discounts be reduced from 50% to 10% for campgrounds and related Granger-Thye2 concessions.

Bill consider making this a sticky post.

I have mixed feelings on this one. One one hand, it's nice that I get a 50% break on camping fees. And in this era, no one ever wants to give up a government entitlement. But I never could figure out why I should pay less to camp than my neighbor just because of my age. Explain the logic of that to me.

I guess the logic behind senior discounts is that those who provide them assume seniors are retired on fixed incomes that probably don't keep pace with salary increases. I suspect that the logic behind eliminating them is that no one can retire anymore ;-)

I think that as the # of seniors increase and the # of young people decrease, we may see a lot of similar tactics.

It's not like the old days when seniors were a very small minority. IMHO, asking young people, that don't have the advantages that we enjoyed, to pay more so that we can pay less does seem a bit out of whack. It made sense at one time but those times are over.

I don't want my kids & grandkids to have to pay more for goods & services so that we seniors get a break. It just doesn't seem fair. Life is a lot harder these days then when I was growing up.........$50K a year to go to college.....who'd have ever believed that. Median price of a home $350K with an average household income of $50K. I was making $40K+ at 25 years old and the median home price was $50K.

We had our chance and we squandered our wealth (and our grandchildren's wealth). I don't see where we deserve any special favors. Just my 2 cents.

The proposal was shot down. Now if we can get rid of the 14 days on, a year off the forest rule.
