Default Lamoille Canyon, Nevada

Anyone who thinks Nevada is all sagebrush needs to take a short 20 minute jaunt south of Elko and catch Lamoille Canyon in the Ruby Mountains. It's dubbed the "Yosemite" of Nevada which may be a slight overstatement but it is a spectacular and very accessible glacier formed canyon. There is a nice BLM campground half way up the canyon. It is dry camping but has potable water and a dump station. Lots of easy trails as well as longer ones for the more adventurous.

We found this while staying overnight in Elko, so we didn't stay overnight but we have already made plans to spend 3 or 4 nights here next year.

Here are some pix:

Great pics, thanks for posting! I wish we were closer.....it's doable for us, but not for a weekend.

I found the Ruby Mountains on one of my recon runs when I was a host in the Wasatch Mountains. In all my travels across our continent, they were the biggest surprise. I'd driven across the Bonneville Salt Flats and sagebrush before arriving at this oasis.

Is that a picture of a beaver dam?

My last name is Beavers, so I have a modest interest in the critters.

I have never been to the Ruby Mountains, but my dad and brothers have gone hunting there. I never had much interest in the area, but now I do. Thanks for the pix.

Yep, it is. I've seen lots of beaver dams but never one as large as this. Really impressive.
