Organizing a Trip to Mexico

Several members of the TrailManor TrailBlazers club have been on camping trips to Mexico and there are others who want to go. We're looking for comments on what to see, problems that may be encountered, etc. Also, if you have an interest in going, post that. Perhaps in a couple of months we'll have enough info to start specific planning. Right now the target date would be early 2005.

Any part that would be good for camping in a TrailManor. This is a preliminary inquiry to get some ideas about where and when to go. If there is enough interest we'll get more specific.

I would like like to take the TM to Mexico, it would be quite an adventure. We haven't been there in a long time. A friend from the office went there a year ago to visit family in Guadalajara (from Calif) via passenger car, and didn't have any problems, but all of them do speak fluent Spanish and are Hispanic.

Another guy (a gringo) we know has a condo in Cabo, he has driven down there at least twice. He says that there are Mexican "rangers" in green vehicles that kind of patrol and will help the tourists if they break down. He cautioned that you should always have a planned place to stay, because there is very little between one viable "lodging area" and the next. He said that you don't want to just stay out in the middle of nowhere by yourselves. You should plan on no more than 300 miles per day, and said to ALWAYS buy gas where you see it because a lot of times they just don't have any at the next place. Also, to carry at least two 5 gallon gas cans full. He loves it down there!

If we were to go to Mexico, it would have to be during Christmas vacation (12/20/04 through about the next 3 weeks) or early in the summer. It gets pretty hot down there, at least on the West Coast. We're from the fog zone here in CA so don't really like the heat.

Don't know if I could talk B into going, though, he worries so much, especially with the kids along. Probably if there were several other people going he would go for it....

If you live in the south central region, you could form a trip to Monterrey. I live 5 minutes from the lake and there is a resort, Bahia Escondida. They have a great campground that until last November was a KOA. If you stay there you have free access to the resort, swimming pools, jacuzzi, tennis, spa and restaurant.

From the campground is Cola de Caballo, a great waterfall and from there the mountains, altitude 6500 feet. A great three or four day trip just 150 miles south of Laredo or McAllen Texas.

I am told that I make a great host and tour guide. I would eve meet everyone at the border the day before the trip and escort you all down, help with immigration and permits. I tried to post some pics but they are too large.
