generator/gas storage
: w're getting closer to owning a tm, just 4 more
weeks.
we were wondering what generators y'all might recommend
and more importantly, where do you store the gas
for it. 90% of our camping will be with no hook-ups,
out in the boondocks.
thanks

Re: generator/gas storage
We have a Honda 2000eui (2000 watts). Very, very quiet at 53 db, very fuel efficient (20-40% less than conventional generators) and very portable (46lbs with integral handle). We have been very pleased and starts with one pull!

Re: generator/gas storage
Will your Honda run the ac? Or would you have to go up to the 3000eui for that purpose? I have been looking into generators as well and really like the yamaha EF2800i. It's rated watts is 2500W and the surge in 2800W. This should work for AC up to 13,500BTU. It is quiet as well 60-67dba and weighing 67lbs. It costs around $1100. A cheaper generator that I am interested in is the Robin RGV2800. It is rated at 2300W with surge of 2800W. It is as quiet as the yamaha, weighs 105lbs and I have seen it on the internet for as low as $699. Hopefully this helps.

Re: generator/gas storage
First off, I don't own a generator. Wish I did.
There have been two or three really good threads on generators in the last two years. I suggest you hit the SEARCH button, type GENERATOR into the search box, and open up the search time from the default 7 days to maybe 600 days.
You need to hear from Wade. Wade, you out there?

Re: generator/gas storage
Grayghost,
You might also consider solar. Several threads about that here.
No gas, oil, or noisy machine to lug into the peaceful outdoors.
After initial expense (probably less than a generator) there is virtually zero maintenance or further expense.

Re: generator/gas storage
thanks bill, i wasn't aware of the search capability on this bb.
jim - i have to laugh ;D - the quiet outdoors does not even come close to where we will be using our tm. we will be using it to go to field trials. there is usually about 4-5 pro trainers with their contingent of dogs they are currently handling in field trials. they all put their dogs out about 6-7 am so the dogs can do their thing
the peace and quiet you describe is a far cry (and bark) from what we will encounter. in addition there are many others there with their generators. it sounds
like the indy 500.
thanks again

Re: generator/gas storage
Grayghost -
The other half of your question was where to carry the gasoline. This question has come up before, but I don't think I've seen a good answer to it.
I would love to carry a spare couple gallons, especially when we travel in the remote regions in the southwest (emergency car gas, not generator gas). But my wife is very sensitive to the smell of gasoline, and I haven't found a container that doesn't stink. That means I can't carry it inside the tow vehicle or the TM. Considering the horizontal propane tanks (slideout model), the swing tongue apparatus, and the springbar brackets, the tongue is already a pretty busy place. So this seems to leave the back bumper as the place to carry it. But I haven't found a good way to strap down a red plastic can back there. Not much width when the TM is closed.
Anyone have any good ideas?

Re: generator/gas storage
If we are only talking about a gallon or two why not buy one of those little siphon pumps and siphon it out of the tow vehicle right into the generators gas tank? Can't get any safer than that !

Re: generator/gas storage
jack that syphon idea is realling thinking outside
the box. what a wonderful idea. so we would just
fill up the gas tank in the van before we get to the grounds and we're set to go.

Re: generator/gas storage
Bill,
Check out www.jcwhitney.com and search for:
SKU# 53ZX0004Y - Gas Can carrier
SKU# 14ZX1134P - 5-gal. Gas Can
SKU# 53ZX0003P - Flexible Screw-on Pouring Spout for 5-gal. Gas Can
SKU# 15ZX8352P - Screw-on Mini Spout for 5-gal. Gas Can (fits unleaded auto gas tank filler necks)
You should be able to mount this carrier on the back bumper. It is used by a lot of the 4-wheel drive folks to carry extra gas.
