Default Carrier Air-V Heat

Camping in WV this last week got a little cool so turned on the heat on the Carrier A/C unit and it was not working-- but it did work last winter. Opened the unit up today and checked the voltage going to the heat strip, was ok. Checked the heat strip with an ohm-meter, it was an open circuit. Pulled the heat strip out and noticed it has what appears to be a thermal cut out switch that cuts power to the heat strip if it overheats. It does have a reset button on it (not mentioned in the A/C users manual), reset and back in business.

I have a theory that it may be best to turn the temperature control to cool and let the heat strip cool down before turning off the fan on the A/C unit. This may prevent the thermal cutout from tripping again -- time and use will tell.

It's inside, pull the inside cover (4 screws), the heat strip just plugs in on the curb side of the unit-- unplug it. Remove two screws holding the strip and slide it toward the front of the TM.

This heater is the subject of a recall from Carrier. I have replaced mine as noted in the following post. It also has some pictures that may help you locate the reset button.

Post #4 in that same thread gives .pdf copies of the documents from Carrier which provide added information about the heater location.

My experience is that the heating element will take the "chill" out of the air,but does not really heat the unit if it gets beyond cool.
Still a decent feature to have.
