Default Smelly Refrigerator Options?

From what I gather from others on this site, the nasty smell coming from the refrigerator means the appliance is "toast" and most likely there is a freon leak. Ours is still cooling - actually freezing - everything, but apparently, it's about to not work at all. We're far from home, so we're about to purchase a compact refrigerator to set on the counter. HOWEVER, has anyone ever replaced their refrigerator with a compact unit from Home Depot or Best Buy? Is there a brand that fits in the same compartment? Is there a way to block the gas supply line without turning off the supply to the oven or heaters? We've got a 2009 3124KS. Thanks!

When you say "smelly", do you mean a pronounced ammonia smell? That is the smell of a leaky cooling system in an RV 3-way frig. If it is some other smell, it source may be something else (cheaper!). Is it stinky like a dead mouse in the cooling mechanism behind the refrig? Smoky / acrid / burned smell?
