Default Blowout issues

We own a 2005 2720 and have had blowouts. Research indicates installing an axel and lift kit that accommodates 15" wheels. Anyone know of a place in Colorado that does this.

You don't require a change to the axle or hubs. The new 15-inch wheels will fit the existing lugs. FWIW, the hole pattern is called "5 on 4 1/2" and it is pretty standard on RVs, campers, boat trailers, utility trailers, and so forth.

If you need a lift (you don't necessarily, but probably) it is quite easy to add, even if you choose to do it yourself. For example, see Bill Miller's post in the TM Technical Library.

Any shop that deals with trailers can handle it. It does not require a TM dealer, or even an RV dealer.

As Bill says, it is not necessary to change the axle. However, in practice, it is surprisingly easy to exceed the maximum weight rating for the axle, so I could understand the desire for some one to upgrade the axle as well. On the other hand, I haven't read anywhere on this forum where some one as bent or otherwise damaged an axle due to overloading.

For what it's worth, you don't need to upgrade the axle (as long as you stay within weight limitations) OR install a lift kit OR use 15" wheels. You can get Load Range D tires in 14" size. Check out strainer.com. Tires come mounted on appropriate, for the higher pressure, wheels. Just have balanced and install them. About $120 each, delivered.

Merrill Axle in Lakewood does a lot of trailer work like lifts, brakes, axles. They do good work, $125/hr labor. 303 237-8846. merrillaxle.com

I think the real idea is to increase the tire load rating with the 15" tires. I don't think the axle has an issue with the weight. The axle rating; you only measure the weight carried by the rubber torsion springs. You would reduce the tongue weight, tires, brake assembly, and spindle weight. I would think that on must TM's, that is a reduction 450 to 700 lbs from the actual weight of the trailer.

But one thing I did notice when we changed TM's; from one with a 3.5k axle to one with a 5.2K axle. The 5.2K axle had huge bearing in comparison to the 3.5K axle. The outer bearing which is the smaller bearing of the set. On the 5.2K axle the bearing larger than the inter bearing on the 3.5k axle. The inter bearing on the 5.2k axle is just so much bigger than the 3.5K axle's bearing. In looking at the spec of the 5.2K axle it has the same bearing set as the 6.0K axle the only difference is the brake set.

If I was think of changing my axle and doing the lift kit for height. I would only do the axle and order an axle with a different angle of the swing arm. I think you could achieve the desired lift with a different swing arm angle.
