Uber isn't allowed here in Rochester, NY either... I kinda get Uber. Awful lot of room for some bad stuff to go down with that.

I have see it out at beach towns. The don't want to have bags filling up with water and sand in the surf.

I believe the problem with plastic bags is that they're not biodegradable.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Looks like I have more options than I realized.

I have friends who just moved from San Antonio (I used to live there, too) to Austin. I couldn't believe it when she told me about the grocery bag ban. She was pretty put out about it because she actually uses those for her trash bags, too. So much for "reuse and recycle". Now she'll have to buy garbage bags which aren't biodegradable either. Which makes about as much sense as banning mercury thermometers while pushing everyone to switch to cfl bulbs.

The great State of Texas is a bastion of self sufficient independent thinking individuals that cherish the rights of others and for the most part are conservatives...accept Austin, which is an island that is rife with tree huggin TAX and spend (other people's money) liberals who want to tell you how to run your life and make up your mind for you (or mob rule...it's like two wolfs and a sheep deciding what's for lunch) .... but in reality there isn't a dimes worth of difference on either side of the aisle nationally...it's just two sides of the same coin that offers you the illusion of choice...so they came up with the excuse of the plastic bag wasn't eco friendly and the green revolution must always win...but the funny thing is that all the little municipal communities around Austin don't seem to care one way or another...so there you have it...Hiel Hitlery!

That is all correct, but then not much that the city council does makes any sense...all they do is line there pockets with contractor money and then get out while the gettins good so the next crook can step in...a never ending chain of jerks! If it wasn't so nice here I'd split! Geographically speaking, Austin is the best place to live in Texas...it's all the folks from out of state who think they are cooler than sliced bread who have moved here and usurped the locals that have done the damage. Austin use to be sooo laid back..now it's mega condo crud! tisk tisk tisk....saw a bumper sticker the other day that read...Welcome To Austin...now go home! grocery bags! SHEESH!
Tom who will climb off his soap box now
