How Busy is Vermont in the Fall?

New England members,

We're planning a leaf-peeping trip this fall, ending up at Elmore State Park in Vermont. I'm not big on making reservations because I like to have flexibility.

But, is this a mistake? How packed are Vermont state parks during the first week of October?
