Default Kidde Recall

Thought was posted earlier but Kidde is having a massive recall on fire extinguishers and the original in my '06 is one and being replaced.

I had four large ones in my home that were already replaced but forgot about the one in the TM until opened for periodic checkout. A new one has now been promised.

Thanks for posting. I saw the recall, but haven't popped the camper to check yet. The images sure look like it.

The fire extinguisher in our TM was affected by the recall, and Kidde replaced the unit at no charge. So that is great. Unfortunately though, the new one, which has about a pound more retardant and about 2 inches shorter, is about 3/8" larger in diameter. That means it won't fit in the old bracket.

Has anyone come up with a solution yet? The new one comes with a bracket, but it's surface mount. The old bracket is recessed, and mounted in the wall that holds up the range. See attached photo of a new one. I could maybe build a support for the new bracket, but that probably would take some work.

I haven't contacted Kidde yet, but I don't see any recessed brackets (except for large units) on their website.

Where/how are extinguishers mounted in newer TM's?

Dave

Default Kiddie recall

Apparently they send different mounting options, this is what I received today. Needless to say , will have to mount differently than original, thinking I may mount it at the bathroom bottom door area so it’s easily accessible. Will have to see where it fits best since bathroom door goes down over that area too . Will post mounting pics when I’m done. If anyone has a better idea for mounting let me know .

Default Recall

Never saw a specific date anywhere on the recall.

That's the kind of mount I got with the new extinguisher. The one in the picture I posted is the mount used for the old one (but a photo of a new, unused mount). Sorry for the confusion.

My extinguisher is white. I think it's the same exact thing as you have, but just marketed to marine applications. I'm not sure why I got it. Maybe I selected something wrong on the form.

Default Kidde recall - replacement doesn't fit cabinet

My replacement Kidde fire extinguisher arrived the other day. The new one is
definitely bigger than the old one. I had to enter the VIN of my TM. Then
the Kidde recall website told me the replacement wouldn't fit.
So, after reading this thread, we are all likely in the same predicament.

I intend to research the following replacement cabinet.
Cabinet

My TM is closed and covered for the winter so it might be awhile before I can
determine if the old cabinet can be removed and replaced with a new
cabinet. Wonder if the stove will have to be removed temporarily just to
swap the cabinet?

Out of my 4 kidde's at home only the Red ones were under recall. The white ones were good. Same model but red were under recall.

I'm going to mount my new fire extinguisher in the same place with the old mount. I checked out the cabinet Doug posted about above, and they can be had for $30-$40 + shipping. But then I realized they don't include the actual cylinder mount. It's just a box.

So I removed the old box, which has the cylinder mount built in, and modified it. I cut the top yolk part from which the cylinder hung with a Dremel, cut out the backing support half way down the cylinder, and then screwed into the box the new mount that came with the fire extinguisher. I used a scrap piece of plywood for some backing support.

From a previous repair, I also have some small pieces of plywood (1" square) into which each of the 6 mounting screws for the old mount go into. Pictures below. Took me an hour to figure out what I was going to, gather my tools, and rummage through the garage to gather the plywood and new hardware.

Total cost: $0
