Default Crossing the border from USA to Canada

We are planning a trip to Nova Scotia in late September. We will be going over the border from Maine into New Brunswick. We have never been across the border with a camping trailer. Will they make us open up our TM? What about when we return to the USA?

I can't answer for the Canadian side, but US customs can ask to see the inside of your camper and tow vehicle. I would be prepared to have to open the camper, and be very happy if you don't have to.

Border services on either side have the right to take your car apart. Opening the trailer is a possibility. Maybe it's because I have Nexus, but when I purchased my trailer and brought it up into Canada at 2 AM, I was almost surprised they didn't have me open it.

You need to be able to say "NO!" when they ask if you have any firewood anywhere in your rig. Don't even try it - it just isn't worth the hassle.

I imagine there are several other commodities that need the same answer, so try to do your homework. Out west it is "citrus". In the north Atlantic area it might be "shellfish" or "lobster".

And if you have a pet, be sure you understand the rules in that area. We had to cancel an entry to Canada once because we didn't have a health certificate from a vet, signed just before the trip within a relatively narrow time window.

I've gone across the border in each direction two years in a row. Very low key. Entering the US I got more questions and scrutiny than going into Canada. Never had to open the camper though. Pretty easy and friendly, all in all.
Nova Scotia is very cool. Have Fun!

Going into Western Canada we've had to throw away fruit on several occasions, so now we try not to take fruit. We've taken one trip with the TM and were glad we didn't have to open it up either way, but really it wouldn't be as big a deal as when we were tent camping and had them inspect our mini-van (on the way coming back in to the US)

I would contact C B P first. I would say that unless there is a specific need to bring a firearm into Canada, I'd leave it at home.

I have never had the border people on either side give me any issues. But as Bill said know what not to bring into Canada and what you can bring back into the USA. Guns are not good to have crossing into canada. I would not bring any fresh fruits or vegetables to the border either way. Make sure you have you pet's records and they had the required shots

But for any reason, including being selected for a random search they can ask you to open the camper going either way.

Default No Guns

Giant NO on guns going into Canada. Someone had given my wife a little MACE keychain spray. She had to dispose of that.
