Default Flamingo in the Everglades

We just left the Flamingo Campground in the Everglades N.P. and are happy to report that the electrical RV sites are up and running. I guess the generators in the hotter seasons were driving everybody nuts.

No water at any sites though, and no hot water in the public showers at the electrical RV sites. (But the showers in the tenting areas do have hot water.)

Very few people there in early December, except for fishermen on the weekends. So very, very quiet especially during the week. Not even any airplanes over-head. Hard to believe that Miami is just a few hours away on one side and Naples/Fort Myers on the other.

The weather was perfect for us, especially as the wind picked up between 9am and 4pm driving off a few remaining mosquitoes in the breezy and well-mowed campgroound.

We spent most our time in the kayaks and did some biking. But avoid Rowdy Bend biking trail as it's un-mowed, and the grass will clog your gears ... and then the mosquito hordes appear ... And we avoided the hiking-only trails at this time because of the mosquitoes.

No Verizon connectivity but apparently ATT works.

All-in-all a great time. And very peaceful, especially without cell-phone and email.

We had planed to stay there back in the early '70's. No electrical than and the grass at the camp sites was waist high. the 'skeeters carried you off before getting the tent set up
Sounds like things have changed a great deal.

For some reason, we've had more problems this year with "no-see-ums" than 'skeeters.

At Flamingo campground the 'skeeters were never bad, and even then their "bites" were pretty harmless (very little swelling and itching). Also the screens work!

At Jonathon Dickinson S.P. though we were plagued by "no-see-ums" that got through the screens, and they really caused a lot of itching. At one point my wife just closed all the windows and turned on the air-conditioner; about the only time we've used it all winter down here.

We were at the campground close to the river, maybe next time we'll try the one up near the highway where there's more breeze and less shade.
