Default URGENT: keys to door & compartment

Hi All

My new to me 2010 TM 2720SD is being delivered tomorrow. Guy hauling it says he didn't get any keys from the dealer. Dealer says, yes we gave him keys.

So, I know these are pretty generic keys, but if I stop in at a local dealer to buy a key is there a particular name or style of key that I need to ask for?

You should contact the dealer and have them overnight, Saturday delivery, a set of keys. Tell them you won't sign for the TM without that guarantee. In fact ask for a tracking number. You paid a lot to purchase and have it delivered. I refused to sign for a house closing once when something was not right and you should have seen how fast things got fixed.

I like the idea about refusing to sign for it.

The compartment lock keys are supposed to be pretty generic. You could probably order them from Trailmanor or perhaps a similar lock from a hardware would fit.

Since the door locks are not locked when the trailer is closed you could probably remove the existing locks and get them replaced or re-keyed. If you are handy you could do this yourself or any locksmith could handle it. A locksmith could probably help wiith the compartment keys as well.

The first thing I did when I got my TM was remove the door lock (2 screws) and the compartment lock (one nut and one screw). Went to Lowe's and bought a new lock for door and for the compartment. Now I know that nobody else knowingly has keys to my kingdom on wheels. Well worth the under $20 cost.

I agree with the recommendation to refuse delivery until keys arrive that match the trailer. If the shipper drops the trailer anyway, a locksmith can easily open the door for you. As suggested, I would then buy a new lockset.

For $20, Camping World sells a set of 4 locks that use a cylinder-style key for the storage areas on the TM. When the trailer is folded down and secured its no big deal, but when the trailer is open the storage locks can be opened by a key used by most RVs sold in the US.

I might also suggest getting a set of four small padlocks to lock the latches on the corners of the trailer. I had them pop open on my first TM, and it also keeps curious fingers from trying to open the trailer when you stop for meals or are away from the trailer.

My key to the storage area says Hudson, CH751.

When we bought ours, the dealer said they'd lost the keys. My son climbed in from under the front bed and unlocked it for us (it wasn't latched). The dealer just happened to have one of the generic lock keys. We put on a new door knob with a lock before we left for home.

The CH751 opens almost everything in the RV industry. It even opens the glove box on my golf cart. Everybody in a campground has one. That's why I changed my storage locks to cylinder keys. The storage areas can be forced open, but it gives me proof of theft. I guess I am a cynical city boy, but I have also been robbed in the past...

Default Thanks everyone!

Thanks for all the great responses. I like the idea of just changing out the locks.

It will be interesting to see if the keys are actually there. I suspect the delivery guy has them, just didn't look close enough.

Be sure to look in the magazine rack on the front door...a lot of dealers toss them in there.
